Gaumee Party has condemned the manner in which Dhiyana was taken into custody by the Police tonight, saying that it was disrespectful to a woman’s dignity and honour.

They said that the fact that Dhiyana was arrested while she was sitting peacefully at Jumhooree Maidhaan shows that President Mohamed Nasheed’s regime has no compassion or kindness for Maldivian women.

“the fact that violence is imposed on women today shows that the President is capable of being violent towards any Maldivian citizen, as a result of his greed for power.”

Gaumee Party further strongly condemned the ruthless actions of the Police Officers who forcefully took Dhiyana into custody.

“Police Officers who obey unlawful demands and act violently towards women and citizens should take responsibility for their actions. Justice against these individuals will be granted someday. We advise the Police to not comply with President Nasheed’s unlawful demands,” Gaumee Party said.

Moreover, they said that President Nasheed has lost the confidence of the Maldivian people, and is therefore trying to remain in power by manipulating the Police and the Military.

Dhiyana has now been released after being arrested while sitting peacefully at Jumhooree Maidhaan.
