Attempted import of nearly 2kgs of drugs uncovered

Nearly 2 kilograms of drugs have been discovered hidden in a car being imported to the Maldives.

Customs said today that 1.8 kilograms of a material suspected to be drugs were discovered during an operation carried out in Male’ Commercial Harbour last night. They said that the substance tested positive for Heroin.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Police and Customs. Customs revealed that a car imported to Maldives from Sri Lanka was inspected after they received information from a local source, and that they materials were discovered hidden inside the car’s engine.

While Police have initiated investigations, it is not yet clear whether anybody has been arrested regarding the matter. Customs has also said that the relevant Sri Lankan authorities have now been notified and that they are currently in the process of collecting additional information surrounding the case.
