Protests took place for a tenth night in a row in capital Male’ following the arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed. Last night’s protest came to an end with the Defence Forces coming into action and arresting several demonstrators around 1.00am.
Among the participants of last night’s protest was Kulhudhuffushi Dhekunu MP Mohamed Nasheed, who said in his speech that if Judge Abdulla committed a crime, the necessary steps should be taken against him. However just like any other offender, he should also be given the opportunity to exercise his rights as guaranteed by the Constitution. MP Nasheed questioned how serious a crime Judge Abdulla has committed for him to be denied his rights.
Leader of Jumhooree Party Ibrahim Gasim was also seen at last night’s protest. In his speech he called the Chief of Staff and Police Officers to work within the limits of the law, and said that regardless of the pressure and threats imposed on him, he will not back down in his efforts to restore justice in the country.
Similar to preceding nights, protesters called for the release of Judge Abdulla and for the resignation of the government.
No confrontations took place until the arrival of the Defence Forces at the protest area. As they began arresting people, the protesters responded by throwing stones and even coconuts at the officers. According to a Defence Forces Media Official, the number of arrests made last night is yet unknown.
