President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has urged the people to join Gaumee Ithihad Party (GIP), saying that if a person wants to work for the betterment and future of the country, they should join GIP.
At a meeting held as part of a series of regular meeting held at the party’s campaign post, the President said that he has tried to work interdependently and peaceably with all political parties and that even though his party held a number of people who had the capacity to fill cabinet positions, he chose to being his journey by appointing people from different political parties for such reason.
Referring to the bill on political parties that was recently passed for a second time by the Parliament, the President said that he sent the bill back for consideration by the parliament because the bill had conflicting notions and that he believe that for the parliament to pass the bill without reflecting on the amendments he proposed was stubborn and unbeneficial for the country. He said that it he would have succeeded if he tried to expand Gaumee Ithihaad Party, but said his priorities lie with the interest of the country.
“If you want my services, for the sake of the country’s future, you have to do something for me as well. There are numerous ways for you to join me, and one of them is to join my party. That’s what I ask. It is not what I desire the most. But reflecting on the situation today, the people who support me have to take my hand. To some extent, I was aware that this day will come. It is not something to be surprised about. Gaumee Ithihad is still small. Larger parties have worked towards eliminating this party. Who does it threathen for Gaumee Ithihad to exist? This party’s members don't go out and harass the people. This party’s members don’t go out and try to take away the members from other parties either. So why does this party have to be dissolved?” President Waheed said.
The President said that Gaumee Ithihad represents the unity of the country and that the party will always work for fairness, equality and justice.
“If we have to divide a cake amongst everyone, the people who want the larger portion can’t necessarily have it, because everybody has to get a share. Our principles are that we treat our brothers and sisters equally, that everybody be treated justly. Fairness, justice, unity and friendship are scary qualities for some people,” said the President.
The recently passed bill on political parties states that parties with a membership count of less than 10,000 members are to face dissolution. Gaumee Ithihad party has decided to submit this issue to the Supreme Court.
