An agreement has been signed to assign Danish company MT Hojgaard to implement the establishment of the first regional waste management centre in R. Vandhoo.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held today at Nasandhura Palace Hotel.
Minister of State for Environment Abdul Matheen Mohamed told Sun Online today that the purpose of this project is to facilitate safe and proper waste management facilities in Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani atolls.
“A project worth MVR 60 million has been awarded to MT Hojgaard today. This includes projects to develop Vandhoo, construction of Vandhoo harbour and construction of roads necessary for the establishment of the facility,” Matheen said.
Matheen said that this is a model project which also includes the purchase of a barge to transport waste material. He said that a region in Vandhoo will be used for industrial purposes in the future.
The Maldives Environmental Management Project is financed by a $13.8 million loan from World Bank.
