Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai has said that there is a “narrow window of opportunity" to solve the problems in the Maldives.
Indian newspaper The Times of India (TOI) reports Mathai to have said that talks between India and Maldives, after former president Mohamed Nasheed sought refuge in the Indian High Commission in Male’, has created a narrow window of opportunity to solve the internal problems in the Maldives.
"We believe we have created a window of opportunity even though it is a very narrow one," said Mathia, Times of India reports.
The paper refers to Indian sources that have said that there is still a fair amount of uncertainty about events that will transpire before the elections.
"It's a little early for us to pat our backs when elections are scheduled only in September. It is difficult to predict what all is going to happen before that," the sources said, reports TOI.
It also states that President Dr. Mohamed Waheed’s administration has agreed to receive an Indian election commission team for technical assistance in conducting polls and that it is seen as a positive development by Indian officials.
India has maintained the stand that Nasheed's decision to walk out of the Indian High Commission was of his own free will and that no deals were made in return.
Maldivian government has also maintained the same stand.
