The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has launched a program to expand employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
At a ceremony held Thursday, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed handed over job certificates to 30 newly employed STELCO staff.
Speaking at the event, Sajidha highlighted the benefits of workplace inclusion, noting that employment improves health, lifestyle, and financial security. She said making new friends at work brings mental satisfaction, while praise and encouragement build self‑confidence. Sajidha added that maintaining daily routines instills discipline and helps employees develop valuable skills.

The initiative is part of the government’s policy to provide income‑generating opportunities for persons with disabilities. While the stated aim is mainstreaming, the government continues to mark such employment with special ceremonies. With the new recruits, STELCO said the total number of employees with disabilities at the company has risen to 80, serving across both technical and non‑technical fields.
Before the ceremony, a minute of silence was observed in memory of STELCO employee Ahmed Azmeel, who passed away Thursday while receiving treatment abroad after being injured in a workplace accident on November 26.
