Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has said that big countries around the world accept that Maldives Police work according to the law and regulations.
The commissioner said in a video interview posted by Police Media, that the international community no longer believes rumours and baseless complaints about the work of Maldives Police.
He noted that consultants from around the world presently work at various levels in the police institution.
“We are trying to develop this institution by opening it to all sectors and working with them. You can show videos and talk about things that happened a long time ago, but people won’t believe or accept them,” he said.
Riyaz said in the two-minute video posted on YouTube, that feedback had been received that the work of Maldives Police is accepted by Maldivian citizens as well as the international community. He said that efforts are ongoing to address the areas that require correction.
Riyaz said that the police will not violate the law and that no person will be arrested against the law. He said that the police will act according to the law towards every person, regardless of his present or past high employment post.
The police are constantly criticised by opposition groups for the manner in which they deal with protesters.
