Sun Siyam Group has pledged USD 200,000 to support neighboring Sri Lanka in overcoming its current crisis.
Founder Ahmed Siyam Mohamed handed over a symbolic cheque to Sri Lankan High Commissioner Mohamed Rizvi Hassen on Sunday, donating USD 75,000 of the pledged amount. He confirmed that further contributions will be made in the coming days.
During the meeting, Siyam and High Commissioner Rizvi reflected on the strong friendship between the two nations. Siyam noted that Sri Lankans have long supported Maldivians, whether through teachers, economic activities, or other services, and described Sri Lanka as one of Maldives’ closest neighbors.
He also highlighted Sri Lanka’s swift assistance during disasters, calling it a symbol of the enduring relationship between the two countries. “It is also a religious obligation for Maldivians to help Sri Lanka at such a time of disaster,” Siyam said, adding: “We will also be safe in the future by holding the hands of those who are experiencing such disasters.”
Starting Monday, Sun Siyam Group will launch fundraising activities across its companies and resorts to further aid Sri Lanka. Siyam also sent a special letter to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, offering encouragement and reassurance of his support.
High Commissioner Rizvi expressed gratitude for the assistance, describing it as a significant gesture that reflects the brotherly bond between Maldivians and Sri Lankans. “This is no small thing… no small thing for the people of Maldives to help us so,” he said.
Siyam also signed the guest book during the meeting.
The group operates Sun Siyam Pasikuda, a five-star luxury resort in Sri Lanka. The property has won TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best award, underscoring the group’s strong presence in the region.
