Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has announced that the government will hand over the planned parking buildings to contractors within the next month, with construction expected to begin in three to four months.

Speaking on state media, Minister Ameen highlighted that parking remains one of the biggest challenges in Male', where the growing number of vehicles has left the city congested and short of space.

To address the issue, the government has unveiled plans to build parking facilities with a combined capacity of over 7,000 vehicles. The minister noted that the project requires large tracts of land and significant investment, but is being given priority due to the scale of the problem.

Under an agreement signed with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on October 3 last year, 15 parking buildings will be constructed in Hulhumale', providing 4,000 parking units. The facilities will feature commercial parking slots, designated spaces for public vehicles, and charging stations for electric cars. Energy for the buildings will be generated from renewable sources, while terraces will be leased for cafes, restaurants, and sports arenas.

Minister Ameen also reiterated that many vehicles currently operating in Male' are registered outside the capital, calling the situation illegal and stressing the need for stricter regulation.
