Faresmaathoda Council President Ahmed Imthiyaz stated that the goods aboard ‘Fahi Roalhi’—a boat from the island that sank on Saturday—were valued at approximately MVR 5 million.
Speaking to Sun on Sunday, Imthiyaz said the boat—reported by authorities to have sunk on Saturday—had actually wrecked a reef a couple of days back.
Imthiyaz added that the total extent of the damage could not be assessed, as most of the vessel had sunk. However, citing a crew member, Imthiyaz estimated the value of the goods aboard the boat at roughly MVR 5 million.
In a message to the media on Saturday, the Maldives Police Service said they received a report around 5:01 a.m. that morning stating that ‘Fahi Roalhi’—a boat traveling from Malé to Faresmaathoda carrying a large consignment of goods—had run aground on a reef near V. Fulidhoo.
The Police detailed that 12 people aboard the vessel were safely escorted to Felidhoo. They include six passengers, the boat’s captain, its owner and four foreign crew members.
The Police added that a majority of the vessel had sunk in the wrecking which is under further investigation by the authority.
