The police have asked the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for criminal charges against a young policeman who was arrested in September on suspicion of smuggling drugs into the custodial jail in the Hithadhoo district of Addu City.

In a statement on Sunday, the police said that the 25-year-old police constable, a native of Hithadhoo, was arrested following intel that he was attempting to smuggle contraband into the detention facility.

Based on the intel, the police stopped and searched the policeman at around 10:54 pm on September 4, and found him carrying a substance believed to be drugs.

He was immediately apprehended.

According to the police, the constable was initially remanded for 15 days, and then released from custody on September 20 after the remand period expired.

The police said that they wrapped up the investigation into the police and requested the PGO for criminal charges against the constable on October 13.

The policeman is currently suspended without pay.
