The case relating to Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed who was arrested and denied his rights by the country’s Security Forces has been submitted to the International Criminal Court (ICC) today.
The submitted case was endorsed by 19 lawyers of the Maldives. Prosecution of this case was requested based on the fact that the arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed fits the definition of ‘enforced disappearance’.
The documents submitted to the Information and Evidence Unit of ICC at The Hague in The Netherlands include detailed descriptions of the events which took place between Maldives Police Service and Criminal Court prior to the arrest of Judge Abdulla. It also includes detailed accounts of how he was arrested and several other events relating to this case.
The case further indicates that both MNDF and Police were involved in the arrest of Judge Abdulla. The entire operation was against the country’s Constitution and regulations, which is a fact confirmed by the Prosecutor General and Chief Justice of the country.
The team of lawyers said that a response will be received from ICC after their Prosecutors and a panel of Judges conduct investigations into the case.
Submission of this case to ICC comes at a time when Maldives has also requested the UN to provide a team of foreign Judges, in efforts to find a solution to the problems faced by the country today.
