Foreign Minister is the chief agent of anti-religious activities: Adhaalath Party

Adhaalath Party has accused Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem of being the government’s chief agent in carrying out anti-religious activities in the country.

Speaking at a news conference today, President of Adhaalath Party Sheikh Imran Abdulla said that the fact that the Foreign Minister sent a letter to the United Nations Human Rights Committee regarding the current situation of the judicial system of the Maldives is proof that he is the chief agent of the anti-religious proceedings undertaken by the government.

“The speech made by the Foreign Minister yesterday is one which conveys a very bad message. From what’s happening now, his speech confirmed the claims being made by the public,” Imran said. “It was undeniable proof that the current government is anti-religious, carries out anti-religious activities, and that the Foreign Minister is the chief agent for this.”

In a news conference held yesterday at the Foreign Ministry, Minister Naseem said that the United Nations has been requested to send a team of foreign Muslim Judges in order to solve the current problems faced by the legal system of the Maldives.

“I have sent a letter to the office of the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights. In this letter I have asked for assistance in solving the current problems faced by the courts of the Maldives. I requested that a team of international-standard Judges be sent to Maldives. I sent this letter subsequent to President Nasheed’s efforts last week,” Naseem said.

Imran said that the Foreign Minister is eagerly waiting to establish an autocratic government in the country, and that most of the orders now come from him.

“Orders which should come from the Foreign Minister come from him. Orders which should come from the Chief justice and Prosecutor General also come from the Foreign Minister. As such, I have no doubt that he is eager to take this government to a new level of autocracy and that he is the agent for anti-religious activities,” Imran said.

He further said that the country’s legal system can be improved by holding discussions with foreign groups, however, the employment of foreigners in Maldivian courts will not be allowed.

Spokesperson of Adhaalath Party Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed expressed concern over the fact that Foreign Minister Naseem sent a letter to United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay requesting for assistance in improving the legal system of the country. He also said that even though this is worrying, it is not a problem to hold discussions with foreign groups to obtain suggestions on how the system can be improved; the problem is the fear of having foreign Judges working in Maldivian courts.
