Dhiraagu launches full fiber coverage, marking milestone in national connectivity

Dhiraagu celebrated the expansion of its high-speed fiber broadband service to all inhabited islands in the Maldives on Thursday.

The company marked the achievement at a ceremony held at Nasandhura Palace Hotel on Thursday.

This is the first time a Maldivian telecommunications company has achieved nationwide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) coverage. Dhiraagu has now established the Maldives’ largest telecommunications data network.

This is a milestone that even many large and developed countries have yet to achieve, the company said. It will help build digitally empowered communities across the country and expand opportunities to thrive in a connected future.

Dhiraagu stated that this is a major step forward in the government’s vision of establishing the Maldives as a smart nation and improving the quality of internet services nationwide.

Dhiraagu CEO and Managing Director Ismail Rasheed said that Dhiraagu has completed the rollout of high-speed fiber broadband services across the country.

“These include submarine cable projects to strengthen connectivity between the Maldives and international networks, Dhiraagu’s domestic submarine cable systems, projects to enhance the capacity and quality of the core network, and phased deployments of fiber infrastructure in residential areas,” he said.

Speaking at the ceremony, Home Minister Ali Ihusaan said it was a historic achievement that addressed the long-standing difficulties many people faced in accessing reliable internet.

The minister said this milestone aligns with the Maldives 2.0 initiative launched by the government. He thanked Dhiraagu for its contribution.

The ceremony was attended by Minister Ihusaan, Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, members of the Board of Directors, senior management, and Dhiraagu employees.
