Two people were arrested by the police on Saturday, on suspicion of luring their alleged victim to Hulhumale’, and robbing them at knife-point, and them stripping them naked and taking videos, which they then used to blackmail the victim for more money.
According to a statement released by the police on Thursday, the incident took place on September 1.
The suspects in question held the victim hostage at an apartment in Hulhumale’, intimidated and assaulted them using a sharp-edged weapon, stripped them naked, took photos and videos, robbed them of their phone and money, and continued to blackmail them for more money.
The two suspects in the case – men aged 27 and 29 – were arrested from Hulhumale’ on Saturday.
When presented before a judge on Sunday, the 27-year-old was ordered to jail pending the outcome of his trial, while the 29-year-old was remanded in police custody for 10 days.
The 29-year-old in question had also been arrested by the police from Hulhumale’ in a similar case back on September 4.
He and another suspect arrested in the case were accused of catfishing a person via Facebook Messenger, and then luring them to Hulhumale’ Phase I by claiming to be in possession of a nude video of them.
After successfully luring the victim to Hulhumale’, they proceeded to threaten them with knives and steal the money from their bank account.
According to police, the suspects then stripped the victim naked, took videos of them, and then used the videos to demand more money.
During the raid on their apartment, the police found six knives, and also items they believe were robbed from additional victims. This includes three mobile phones, three wristwatches, one drone, one fishing rod, two pairs of sunglasses, a silver chain, and silver ring.
The police had said that there was evidence of more potential victims, and made a public appeal for victims to come forward and report it to the agency.
