A delegation of senior leaders from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and members of its Foreign Relations Committee recently met with European Union (EU) officials to express their concerns regarding the erosion of democracy in the Maldives. This follows several decisions made by interim President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The meeting, held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, was attended by prominent MDP figures including party President and former Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid, Chairman Fayyaz Ismail, Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, and former Henveiru South MP and MDP Foreign Relations Committee Member Hussain Shaheem.
During their discussions with various EU representatives, the MDP delegation addressed the government's decisions, its perceived political influence over independent institutions, and the adverse impact on the country's political landscape.
Furthermore, the party provided EU representatives with information concerning various allegations of corruption against the current government. They also highlighted the passage of a new media bill, which they claim is obstructing free media and freedom of expression.
MDP noted how the democratic characteristics introduced in the Maldives two decades ago are now in decline.
