Applications for the Dharavandhoo Food Fair officially commenced on Thursday, offering an exciting opportunity for participants to showcase their culinary skills and compete for a grand prize of MVR 6,000.
Organized by the Dharavandhoo Council, the event aims to promote the island's unique and delicious local cuisine while fostering an environment for residents to benefit economically from their culinary talents.
Those interested in participating in the exhibition can register by contacting Councilor Faraha Adam at 9807544 before 14:00 on the 12th of next month.
The exhibition will feature two categories, with prizes awarded to the first, second, and third-place winners. Additionally, a special cash prize will be given to the participant who submits the most food items.
Prizes for Winners:
First Prize: MVR 6,000
Second Prize: MVR 4,000
Third Place: MVR 2,000
Most Items Submitted: MVR 5,000
The exhibition is scheduled to take place on OCtober 17th.
Judging criteria for selecting the winners are outlined in the exhibition rules, focusing on creativity within cultural context, taste, food preparation, cultural aspects of food arrangement, environmentally friendly packaging, cleanliness, and overall presentation.
The rules also state that if there is a suspicion of a food item not being prepared by the submitter, judges reserve the right to question the individual. If it is proven not to be an original creation, judges are empowered to remove the person from the exhibition.
The Dharavandhoo Food Fair is being held as part of the local island council's 'Magey Dharavandhoo' initiative, or 'Visit Dharavandhoo Year 2025' campaign.
According to the Dharavandhoo Council, this campaign seeks to attract tourists seeking authentic experiences, simultaneously strengthening the local economy and promoting environmental preservation. The initiative is designed to extend beyond 2025 with further developmental plans.
