Jameel accused of creating hatred towards the government

A case has been submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office by the Police, accusing Vice President of Gaumee Party Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed of creating hatred towards the government. This comes subsequent to the completion of Police investigations into this case.

A Police Media Official said that the case has been submitted to PG Office today, following the completion of investigations.

The Police accuse Jameel of creating hatred towards the Maldivian government, of speaking in a tone which is damaging to the country’s sovereignty, and of working against religious solidarity in the country.

Dr Jameel was summoned to the Police on five occasions and taken to Dhoonidhoo under accusations of spreading unauthenticated information. On every occasion, the Police released him following court orders that his arrest is made in violation of the law.

Dr Jameel said that accusations of creating hatred towards the government is “madness and make no sense”, and that the current Constitution gives the right to freedom of speech, and the right to criticize the government and work towards overthrowing the government if it is not good enough. He also said that these accusations are made by the government out of desperation.
