Galolhu Dhekunu MP Ahmed Mahloof has said that it is very likely that the current government’s rule will end on 24 February 2012.

Referring to the mass gathering planned for 24 February by opposition parties and the Civil Society Coalition, Mahloof said that it is likely that the rule of the current government will end before the Presidential Elections of 2013.

Mahloof also said that if the government changes now, at a time when the current regime is threatening the country’s legal system, Judge Abdulla will be freed and returned to his post as Chief Judge of the Criminal Court.

“It Is very likely that this government’s rule will end within the next month, or on 24 February. After that, I believe that Judge Abdulla will return to work at the Criminal Court,” Mahloof said at a Press Conference held at PPM Office.

Mahloof further said that he really hopes for the day when President Nasheed is sentenced to lifetime imprisonment, because “he has broken the laws of the Constitution, and weakened Islam in the country”.

In response to Mahloof’s statements, Press Secretary of the President’s Office Mohamed Zuhair said that in a democracy, it is perfectly fine for people to hope to overthrow the government. He said that he hopes that opposition groups, when they talk about overthrowing the government, do so within the limits of the existing laws.

During today’s Press Conference, Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afraasheem said that President Nasheed acts in conflict with the Constitution to show his “wickedness”. He further said that it is not acceptable that the President supports JSC’s decision to take steps against Judge Abdulla subsequent to finding him guilty on charges of bad conduct, before a ruling on this case is issued by the courts.
