Fuvahmulah Airport, which temporarily closed on Tuesday after a firetruck pipe burst, has resumed operations.
Flights of the national airline, Maldivian, the sole airline operation to Fuvahmulah City, were suspended on Tuesday after the firetruck used at the city’s airport was rendered out of service due to the pipe burst.
Efforts to deliver a new firetruck to the airport commenced on Tuesday evening.
Sun has learned that Fuvahmulah Airport resumed operations as usual on Wednesday following the receipt of the new firetruck, with flights set to proceed as scheduled.
Passengers impacted by the disruption of flights on Tuesday were transported to Addu City via RTL ferries for their departure from Gan International Airport.
Speaking with Sun on Tuesday, Fuvahmulah Mayor Ismail Rafeeq said numerous flights were canceled due to the airport closure, stranding many travelers. The Mayor also expressed concern over the disruption to tourist trips. He noted a previous incident of a fire truck pipe breakage disrupting airport operations.
"It is very important to resolve the issue so that such a problem does not happen again in the future,” he stressed.
