A young man stabbed his father in A.A.Ukulhas on Sunday evening.
The attacker was a 26-year-old man.
The injured father is over 60 years old and the son has been undergoing treatment for mental illness since he was a teenager, Ukulhas council president Shaukath Ibrahim told Sun.
The man has been treated abroad in the past for his mental ailment and requires a regular injection, Shakuath explained. However, the young man always refused to get the injection and the due date for his dose had recently passed, he said.
Therefore, the man's family sought the advice of the island health centre, the council and the authorities in Male’ city, he said. The health center went to the young man on Sunday evening and administered the injection, Shaukath said.
The young man became agitated afterwards and attacked his father after people left, he said.
The father sustained injuries to his stomach and arm.
"The knife was pushed towards the stomach, a very small part of it was, not too deep, just a very small part, however, about 1.5 inches of the bicep was cut, but not very deep," he said.
Shaukath said the father was taken to the health center for treatment and is in good condition now.
An official at the Ukulhas Health Center also confirmed to Sun that the injured man was in good condition.
Shaukath said the assailant has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
According to the police, the incident was reported at approximately 22:20, and the 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this case. The police added that further investigations are currently ongoing.
