Most of the cases submitted to the Maldives Media Council (MMC) relate to unregistered news outlets. The MMC announced on Sunday that 54 out of 68 such cases have been resolved.

According to statistics presented by MMC Vice-President Ibrahim Mohamed to the Parliament's Independent Institutions Committee on Sunday, the council resolved 54 out of 61 outstanding cases from the previous term and seven cases submitted this term.

Of the 68 cases, 56 involved unregistered news outlets, including 48 cases concerning Dhiyavaru, two concerning Dhummaari, and two concerning Dhonamaa, he stated.

Ibrahim reported that the MMC has only 13 unresolved cases from the previous term and one from the current term.

In October of last year, the MMC cautioned the public against disseminating articles from the Dhiyavaru news website on social media due to its spread of false information.

The Independent Institutions Committee of Parliament met with the MMC to solicit its views on a bill currently in parliament that would grant the government greater control over the media.

At the parliamentary committee meeting, the MMC stated that it, along with journalists and relevant agencies, had not been consulted during the drafting phase of the bill.
