Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), on Tuesday, has been contracted to develop fitness and recreation centres across 63 Maldivian islands.
The MoU pertaining to the project was signed during a special ceremony held at Meeruma. In this regard, the agreement was signed by CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed on behalf of MACL, while Minister Abdulla Rafiu signed on behalf of Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Shareef said MACL is honored to contribute to fulfilling President Muizzu’s pledge to establish fitness centers on all inhabited islands by 2026, ensuring the physical fitness and well-being of Maldivian citizens.
To date, the Ministry has contracted the development of 87 fitness and recreation centers to both government-owned and private companies. While three of them have been completed, physical works on 28 of them are ongoing.
While the majority of government projects have been handed over to state-owned companies, there has been heavy criticism over the fact that projects have been awarded without consideration to the mandate of the company. In this regard, Fahi Dhirulhun Corporation (FDC), which was incepted for housing purposes, was recently contracted to develop schools across some islands. Road Development Corporation (RDC) has also been contracted to develop hospitals.
