Cannot perceive a conducive atmosphere for elections with protests ongoing: Fuad

Elections Commission President has said that he does not believe it to be a conducive atmosphere for elections if thousands of people pour onto the streets in protests at the date of elections.

In a special interview to Sun Online today, Elections Commission (EC) President Fuad Thaufeeq said that the chaos in the capital has to be reduced in order to conduct free and fair elections.

“This atmosphere needs to change. We have to ensure that the atmosphere is favourable to hold elections. If thousands of people keep protesting as it is happening now, it cannot be perceived as a favourable atmosphere (for elections),” said Fuad.

He said that constant protests will be an obstacle to fair campaigning and that a favourable atmosphere cannot be guaranteed if the protests continue at the time of the elections.

Fuad said that if the atmosphere continues as it is now, the elections commission will not be able to declare a favourable atmosphere for the election, but added that whatever decision make will be thoroughly thought through.

“We will make our decisions on this matter after careful consideration. Even if we release a press statement regarding this, or do something else, all we want to do is take into account the steps that will not deteriorate the situation and with regard to the best interest of the country,” Fuad said.

He said that he is certain that proper discussions among political parties can produce an atmosphere conducive for elections.

“From all side, all political parties have to take part in these discussions. They have to participate in order to find a solution. A solution can be found in all matters. Conflict will not produce favourable results,” said Fuad.

He said that if a large number of people continue to protest, it should be taken as sign that there is a problem with the receiving branch or institution, and that proper steps should be taken by the relevant parties in order to make way for elections.

The constitution states that the Elections Commission must ensure that all elections and public referendums are conducted freely and fairly.
