Government officials are engaged in talks regarding opening a Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) distribution center in neighboring Sri Lanka, according to Masood Imad, Maldives’ top diplomat in Colombo.
During his state visit to Male’ earlier this week, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had invited Maldivian businesses to invest in Sri Lanka.
Maldivian fish products, including cured tuna, has always had huge demand in Sri Lanka.
In an appearance on PSM’s Raajje Miadhu show on Friday, Masood, the Maldivian high commissioner in Sri Lanka, said that given the huge demand, there are great opportunities for Maldivian fisheries sector businesses in Sri Lanka.
According to Masood, Sri Lankan authorities have granted permission to open a fish processing factory in Sri Lanka.
He added that there are also plans to open a MIFCO distribution center and showroom in Sri Lanka.
“They are seeking the information they need. Sri Lanka has a huge market for Maldivian fish. Maldive fish is a label given by Sri Lankans. This is something they began calling,” he said.
Masood believes that MIFCO’s expansion into Sri Lanka will boost bilateral trade between Male’ and Colombo, and benefit the economies of both countries.
