President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday, has said that his recent official visit to Singapore, on the invitation of the country’s president, has ushered in a new era of bilateral ties between Singapore and the Maldives.
The presidential couple visited Singapore this Sunday on the invitation of Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The visit commemorates the 50th anniversary since both countries established their diplomatic relations.
In a post on X, President Muizzu highlighted the leaders had signed on multiple memoranda of understandings (MOUs) during his visit. These include agreements on environment and sustainability; higher education, technical and vocational training; collaboration with Singapore Cooperation Enterprise; and capacity-building programmes for development through study visits.
Besides this, President Muizzu also said that the Maldives-Singapore Business Forum highlighted “exciting trade and investment opportunities.”
“As we mark 50 years of diplomatic ties, I am confident that this visit has opened a new chapter in the Maldives-Singapore relations,” the president added on his social media post.
The Maldives presidential couple also attended a special state banquet hosted in their honor by the Singaporean President and First Lady, Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam.
Prior to the banquet both President Muizzu and President Shanmugaratnam jointly unveiled commemorative stamp designs marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between both countries.
In addition to this, the Maldives President and First Lady had also met with members of the Maldivian community residing in Singapore. The meeting was followed by a dinner hosted by the presidential couple in honor of the community.
President Muizzu thanked Singapore’s President Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong for their hospitality.
