60-year-old man arrested with drugs

A 60-year-old man has been arrested from Hulhumale’ while in possession of rubber packets containing substances suspected to drugs.

Maldives Police Service identified the man as Ahmed Afeef, 60, Maddow Sweet, Male’.

According to the Police, he was arrested from Hulhumale’ Flat No. 10 on Friday night.

Police detailed that Afeef was asked to stop by officers due to suspicious behavior. When asked to stop, officers saw him discard something he had in possession. Officers subsequently stopped him, and then searched the area where he had been, leading to the discovery of five rubber packets containing substances suspected to be drugs.

Upon presentation before the court, Afeef has been remanded in custody for 10 days.

The case is under further investigation by the Police.

Drugs remain one of the biggest social issues in the Maldives.

Customs seized 18 kilos of drugs attempted to be smuggled to the Maldives last week. Home Minister Ali Ihusan placed the street value of the drugs at approximately MVR 26 million.
