The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) announced on Tuesday that it has contracted Rasheed Carpentry and Construction (RCC) to complete the work on ‘The Gardens’ apartment complex project in Hulhumale’ – a project that was originally awarded to JAAH Investments.
JAAH was awarded the contract for ‘The Gardens’ project back in 2017. However, the apartment complex remains incomplete, resulting in losses to people who took out loans to make downpayments for the apartments.
JAAH failed to complete the project despite repeated extensions by the HDC, which finally cancelled the contract on March 16 after the company failed to honor the final notice issued on January 27 to complete the project within 45 days.
JAAH subsequently filed a lawsuit against the HDC with the Civil Court alleging unlawful termination of the contract.
On Tuesday morning, the HDC issued a media statement announcing that it has contracted the RCC to complete the remaining work on the project.
The delay in ‘The Gardens’ project has sparked street protests. In January, people who purchased apartments submitted a petition to the President’s Office asking for compensation.
JAAH, run under the umbrella of construction giant Jausa, has also faced strikes from laborers over unpaid wages.
