Power restored to some areas in Male’ after over two hours

Power has been restored to some areas in Male’ after more than two hours since a sudden power outage hit the Maldivian capital.

The sudden power outage hit the greater Male’ area at approximately 12:30pm this afternoon.

An official from State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) confirmed there is a total blackout in both Male’ City and Hulhumale’.

Back then, the official said efforts were underway to conduct an engine checkup of greater Male’ grid before energizing it, as it is a total blackout. The official added that the gensets will be energized once the checkup is complete.

Just moments earlier, STELCO announced that power has been restored to some areas in Male’. 

The sudden power outage in Male’ and Hulhumale’ affected critical building facilities as hospitals. However, power has since been restored to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Dharumavantha Hospital with special priority.

The power outage is now the subject of a special investigation by the police, after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the hajj pilgrimage, instructed relevant authorities to investigate the blackout as a serious issue.

“The government will do everything necessary to ascertain uninterrupted electricity services and ensure this does not repeat,” he said in a post on X.
