Power has been restored to the two biggest public hospitals located in Male’, as the state utility company works to resolve a huge power outage affecting the capital, including Male’ City, Hulhumale’ and Hulhule’.

Power went out in the greater Male’ area at around 12:35 pm Sunday.

The President’s Office said in a statement that the power went out in the Maldives Blood Service building and all hospitals managed by the Male’ City Group of Hospitals, except for the Vilimale’ Hospital.

However, backup generators kicked-in in all the critical areas of the facilities, such as the Intensive Care Units.

“This did not disrupt patient care,” said the President’s Office.

The Male’ City Group of Hospitals manages four hospitals in the capital; IGMH, Dharumavantha Hospital, Hulhumale’ Hospital and the Vilimale’ Hospital.

A spokesperson from the State Electric Company (STELCO) has said that power has been restored to critical infrastructure such as the IGMH and the Dharumavantha Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Hulhumale’ Hospital and the Maldives Blood Service – the medical facility for thalassemia patients – is running on backup power.

Sun has been informed that the current power outage resulted from the generators in Male’ City got overloaded due to an issue at the Hulhumale’ powerhouse.

However, this has not been confirmed by STELCO, which attributed the blackout to a “technical issue”, but did not elaborate.

The power outage is now the subject of a special investigation by the police, after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the hajj pilgrimage, instructed relevant authorities to investigate the blackout as a serious issue.

“The government will do everything necessary to ascertain uninterrupted electricity services and ensure this does not repeat,” he said in a post on X.

STELCO has said that it is working on restoring power as soon as possible.
