Police arrest 39 people in two days

The Maldives Police Services has told the media that 39 persons have been arrested over the last two days, during the protests now being staged by unified opposition sides against the Government.

Hassan Haneef, Police Media Official, said that that some 27 people who disobeyed police orders during the demonstrations near the Republican Square were arrested yesterday afternoon. He also affirmed that none of those people has yet been released.

Haneef also said that some 16 people were arrested last night, at various areas of Malé for failure to comply with police orders during riots. He also said that among them there were three women as well.

According to reports, one person was also brought under police custody for allegedly causing property damage to the private residence of Hassan Latheef, the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Police Media Official also confirmed that all detainees under police custody were being kept at Dhoonidhoo detention facilities.
