Former President Mohamed Nasheed has met with his family. Nasheed is presently in the Indian High Commission to avoid attending the court for the trial against him regarding the unconstitutional arrest, while Nasheed was commander-in-chief, of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.
Spokesperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Hamid Abdul Gafoor said that Nasheed’s wife Laila Ali and daughter visited him at the High Commission this afternoon.
He said that Nasheed also met members of his family yesterday, and that parliament members and MDP supporters have been visiting him continuously.
Hamid refuted reports that Nasheed is in the Indian High Commission in order to leave the country.
He said that Nasheed entered the High Commission to seek protection and that a solution has to be sought for the charges being pressed against him.
“The purpose of the ongoing trial against Nasheed is to void the candidacy of this party’s presidential candidate. This is a fact accepted by parties other than MDP as well,” Hamid said.
Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Samad Abdullah said at a press conference yesterday that India had said that Nasheed remained inside the High Commission, but he had not been assured protection in any way. Dr Samad said that Nasheed cannot stay in the High Commission forever.
Nasheed took refuge in the Indian High Commission following efforts by the police to implement a court order to arrest him in order to produce him in court for the trial against him regarding the unconstitutional arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.
