Academics responsible in maintaining societal virtues: President

According to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, educated individuals are responsible with maintaining societal virtues and mannerisms.

He made the remarks at the 2025 convocation ceremony of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) held on Saturday evening, where he emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge from various fields.

President Muizzu also highlighted the importance of education for both personal and professional development.

He said that each person has a civic and individual duty towards others, and drew contrast between an academic and non-academic.

“We must shape our lives for the better with the knowledge we attain, and it is our responsibility to provide better opportunities for our children and the next generation. It is also, our individual responsibility to shape our society for the better, to the best of each individual’s capacity,” the president said.

Muizzu also noted that the self-realization and acknowledgment of the responsibility one has in imparting the knowledge they attained is a reason for happiness as well. He noted on the expansive role for academics in the Maldives and advised not to neglect their responsibilities.

He highlighted the duty of academics in ridding the unwelcome elements in a society, and noted the Maldives can achieve social utopia if everyone contributed to the cause.

The president said God blessed mankind with knowledge to use it virtuously, and said applying the knowledge for good causes was not preferential but mandatory.

At the convocation ceremony, President Muizzu affirmed the government will prioritize the development and future of IUM including the development of new campuses across the Maldives.
