Maldives has opened its first resident embassy in Türkiye.
The Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Republic of Türkiye was inaugurated by Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel during a ceremony held at the Embassy on Tuesday.
The inauguration ceremony saw a flag hoisting led by Minister Khaleel, Minister of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye Mehmet Nuri Ersoy and Ambassador of Maldives to Türkiye Lieutenant General (Retired) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef.
The ceremony was also attended by Chairperson of the Maldives-Türkiye Interparliamentary Friendship Group Dr. Ümmügülşhen Öztürk, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, members of the business community, Turkish media, staff of the Embassy and the resident Maldivian community in Ankara.

According to Maldivian Foreign Ministry, the e establishment of a resident Diplomatic Mission in Türkiye marks a historical milestone in the bilateral relations between the Maldives and Türkiye as it will contribute to implementing the Maldives’ foreign policy and assist with the provision of consular services to the growing Maldivian diaspora in Türkiye. The Embassy will also serve as a platform to explore new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Minister Khaleel emphasized the importance of the establishment of the Embassy in Türkiye and expressed that it is a testament to the growing ties between the two nations. The Minister underscored that the Embassy would play a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral cooperation, fostering economic growth, and promoting cultural and people-to-people ties.
Minister Ersoy who also spoke at the ceremony highlighted the longstanding relationship between Türkiye and the Maldives which he cited was based on mutual respect and sincerity. He added that the friendly relations have developed and deepened over the years in many areas from tourism to culture, from economy to education.
