The Minister of Local Government, Adam Shareef Umar has confirmed festive lights would illuminate 65 islands across the Maldives in celebration of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
The festive lights would reportedly be lit up from Saturday, March 29th onward.
The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works have begun works to prepare several local islands ahead of the Islamic festive period. The ministry is supported in the efforts by state owned enterprises (SOEs) and relevant local council authorities.
Minister Adam Shareef, on Saturday, said the festive lights will be illuminated effective next Saturday and added special celebratory activities would be carried out in Greater Male’ area.
The main ‘Eid Ali’ event is set at Central Park, Hulhumale’ on Saturday next week which would be attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
While highlighting that the practice of illuminating the city streets with festive lights began during President Muizzu’s tenure as the Male’ City Mayor during the former government, the minister noted the strong public reception to the practice.
The minister further noted that besides the islands where festive lights were illuminated, festive lights would be sent 36 additional islands for Eid celebrations this year, which the ministry previously said would incur MVR 28 million.
Adam Shareef confirmed installation of lights across Male’ area is ongoing expeditiously, and added the support of State Electric Company (STELCO), SOEs, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and Male’ City Council in the efforts.
