Fathimath Shiuna and Mariyam Zubair, two prominent activists of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have been summoned to the police as part of an ongoing investigation.
Both are being summoned for participating and hosting protests last Monday, in violation of Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act. The two are alleged of participating in protests creating disharmony for public transportation and traffic.
The two have been summoned to the local law enforcement authority at 13:30hrs on Monday, next week.
While the two have been summoned to the police, Mariyam Zubair is currently under extreme scrutiny over recent remarks she had made about the 16-year-old son of the First Couple.
During one of the recent protests, Mariyam claimed the government’s vape ban was motivated after the First Couple’s son was caught vaping.
Former Attorney General, Aishath Azima Shakoor, who is representing the president’s family had issued a statement during a press briefing held on Saturday which announced the First Couple have decided on a civil lawsuit against MDP and its Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.
Both the Elections Commission (EC) and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) have condemned the statements made about the First Couple’s son.
In response, MDP claimed its activists never made any derogatory statements regarding a minor, affirming the party would never make deriding commentary on children.
