Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla on Friday, March 14th, has called out for the harshest action against those who violate the rights of minors within the scope of political rivalry.
He called out for strict measures against individuals who purport false accusations and character assassination attempts against minors within political disputes.
More recently, the main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have been conducting a series of protests in Greater Male’ area. During their recent such protest on Thursday evening, some MDP supporters made derogatory comments about a son of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The act has now been condemned by several different entities and individuals.
MDP has since issued a statement against the Maldives government regarding the incident.
Speaking on the matter, Abdul Raheem has called for strict action against anyone who purport false statements and violate the rights of children and minors for political motives.
He also noted that a statement of condemnation from the Elections Commission (EC) regarding such acts is not sufficient, and added a mechanism should be in place to hold such individuals accountable for such acts.
Both EC and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) issued statements condemning the remarks made against the President’s son.
In response, MDP issued its statement claiming that the decision by EC and HRCM to conclude the remarks had been directed at a minor was an unprofessional act. The party claimed the statements made by these commissions were baseless.
