Ahmed Nareesh has resigned from his role as the deputy mayor of Male’ City.

In a post on X on Wednesday afternoon, Nareesh said he had resigned from the Male’ City Council “after being given the chance to serve the country and the people in another capacity.”

He shared the letter of resignation he sent to Mayor Adam Azim.

In his letter, Nareesh described his time at the city council as “the happiest in my career.” He said the role afforded him the chance to gain different experiences and shape his character.

He also praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, describing him as a leader who has the quality to work together with people, including those of different political affiliations, in order to achieve quick results.

Nareesh thanked President Muizzu, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) – People’s National Congress (PNC) leadership, and his constituents for their support in getting him elected.

He also thanked Azim “for the lessons I learned from you.”

“Though I may have left the deputy mayor role, I assure you that the close and strong bond between the Male’ City Council and I will continue to remain strong,” he said.

A former TV presenter, Nareesh won the Central Maafannu seat in the council elections in 2021 – in which the then-opposition PPM achieved a surprise sweeping victory. He was elected as the deputy mayor on June 21, 2021. Nareesh had served as acting mayor after President Muizzu resigned from his mayoral role after winning the 2023 presidential election.
