The project to redevelop the Rasfannu Artificial Beach will start in the coming week and will be done in two to three months, says Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim.
He spoke about the need to redevelop both Rasfannu and the Sultan Park – two of the city’s most popular public areas – during a ceremony held on Saturday morning to kick off a cleanup event in West Maafannu district.
Azim said that following his election as the mayor last year, he went to inspect the state of the Rasfannu beach with the councilors from Maafannu district – Mohamed Areesh, Hassan Nizam, and Ibrahim Abubakr - following which the city council conducted an assessment of the beach and hired a contractor to redevelop the area.
He noted there is enormous public pressure to do the redevelop works as soon as possible, given the beach is frequented by a lot of residents in Maafannu and beyond.
He said that the city council had cancelled the agreement with the original contractor hired to part of the works because the “the work wasn’t being done right.”
He said the city council signed an agreement with a new contractor on Saturday.
“We assigned a contractor to carry out the works today. The work will start this week. In Sha Allah, I wish to guarantee the place will be completely repaired and redeveloped. And we will not allow it to fall into ruin again. In Sha Allah, the work will be done in two to three months, and the beach will become a high-quality beach once all these huts and other developments are done,” he said.

Azim stressed that it is important that visitors refrain from damaging the beach.
The Male’ City mayor added that the council has completed the assessment on the Sultan Park and posted an announcement on Friday seeking a contractor to redevelop the park.
Azim said that the council was committed to proactively identifying the needs of residents and addressing those needs.
The statements come a day after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who held Azim’s role before his successful 2023 presidential campaign, said he felt sad to see the state of the Rasfannu beach and the Sultan Park.
He made the remark in a post on X after he and his spouse Sajidha Mohamed took their youngest son to the Rasfannu for a family outing on Friday morning.
