Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim, on Friday, revealed 345.15 tons of waste were collected from Male’ roads over the past 19 days.
Azim, in a post on X, said the 345.15 tons of waste collected in the past 19 days amounted to 13.80 containers of waste, measuring 25 feet.
As per Azim, Male’ City Council staff collected 39.5 tons of waste from Male’ roads on Thursday alone.
He appealed to the public against discarding waste on the roads.
Police, on Thursday, said they are undertaking efforts to make litterers remove the waste from roads, if identified.
Discarded furniture and old household appliances had been dumped on doorsteps and pavements as families cleaned their homes ahead of Ramadan, hindering pedestrian movement.
Many have expressed on social media that the waste should be discarded properly under the policy of social responsibility.
WAMCO, noting the issue has been brought to their attention, said they were undertaking efforts in collaboration with Male’ City Council to remove the waste. They also noted that they had, on their own accord, removed waste from areas with large numbers of discarded waste.
The corporation urged the public to discard waste in accordance with the stipulated regulations instead of discarding them on roads.
