Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has pledged to contest the upcoming Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary by pure merit, saying he will not resort to personal attacks or “eat anyone’s flesh and bones” to secure victory.
Azim’s main challenger in the primary is former MP Ali Azim, who left the MDP to join The Democrats ahead of the presidential election. The two have exchanged sharp words during the campaign.
Speaking at a rally on Thursday evening, Azim told supporters that his approach to politics is rooted in problem‑solving rather than defamation.
“My supporters know that I don’t win elections by eating human flesh and bones,” he said. “What I know is to lead with existing problems, discuss solutions, and win elections in the light of solving those problems.”
Azim said he is competing against the challenges facing Male', pointing to issues of property and financial misconduct. He added that he has requested the Anti‑Corruption Commission (ACC) to audit the city council and investigate such cases.
He stressed that he would not defame anyone, but would ensure accountability through proper documentation and transparency.
Azim also pledged that all party members would work together to deliver services that make life easier for citizens. He expressed confidence that the primary would end in a decisive victory.
