Top disbursement to fishers of last two months on Thursday

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has made the largest single-day disbursement to local fishers, since the government implemented a 24-hour payment policy for them.

The first payment made under this new policy pushed forth by the incumbent government, was made on December 10th, 2024 on which a total payment of MVR 2,045,823.37 was issued to fishers.

Meanwhile, MIFCO reports it disbursed a collective payment of MVR 6.5 million last Thursday made out to 60 fishing vessels, making it the largest disbursement since the new policy’s implementation.

A day before, on Wednesday last week, the state-owned fisheries corporation disbursed MVR 5.3 million payment made out to 53 fishing vessels, while on Tuesday of the same week, the corporation disbursed MVR 4.7 million to 41 vessels.

Statistics from the Ministry of Fisheries reveal Maldivian fishers sold 8,324 metric tons of fresh fish to MIFCO in January, making it the highest volume in a January since 1997.

MIFCO earlier on January 12th reports fishing activities across the Maldives have jumped up, with a daily average of 280 metric tons sold to the corporation.
