Man arrested for attempted robbery of a woman on a motorbike

Maldives Police Service has arrested a man over the attempted robbery of a woman driving along Alikilegefaanu Magu in Male’ City on a motorbike.

The suspect has been identified as Hassan Isaam, 30, Fiyabari, Male’.

Criminal Court has remanded him in custody for seven days.

The attempted robbery took place sometime Thursday. Police said Isaam was arrested at 17:20pm that evening.

A video going viral on social media captures an attempted robbery. The footage shows a man riding a motorbike approaching a woman on a motorbike from behind and attempting to snatch her necklace. After his attempt fails, he exits the motorbike and tries to snatch her handbag.

The woman fights back and runs away into an alley on the side of the road. As more people gather at the scene, the man gets back on his motorbike and flees the scene.

He was wearing a red checkered shirt and wearing a white helmet to conceal his face.

Maldives has recently seen a rise in theft and robbery cases.
