The Managing Director of Public Service Media (PSM), Mohamed Saeed has resigned from his position.

Saeed’s resignation was confirmed to ‘Sun’ Online, while he was unavailable for a comment regarding this decision. He was appointed to helm the state-run media last August after his predecessor, Zeena Zahir tendered her resignation.

While this marks the second MD exit from PSM for the year, the channel recently came under fire for airing inappropriate content that showed two people taking a bath on a berthed vessel in the backdrop of a reporter, while in another incident a portion of Quran being recited was omitted during a live broadcast program. An emergency motion regarding the latter incident was submitted to the People’s Majilis, the Maldives parliament, last Thursday.

The emergency motion, submitted by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), alleging PSM was deliberately editing out verses of the Holy Quran in their broadcast programs. Members of the parliament debated on the motion as well.

In response to the said incident, Saeed said the omission occurred owing to a technical mishap due to an employee’s negligence, who has since been relieved of their duties.

Two days later, during the 19:00 hrs English News, the inappropriate content was aired following which, two PSM employees have been suspended already.
