The Maldives needs to explore new markets and launch new products in order to boost the value of Maldivian fish products in the global market and develop the fisheries sector, says Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, the president of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
Siyam, who is also the parliamentary representative for Meedhoo constituency, made the remarks in his address on occasion of the 44th National Fishermen’s Day on Tuesday.
In his address, Siyam noted that fishing is deeply ingrained into the Maldivian way of life. He also stressed the crucial role of fisheries as one of the country’s main economic drivers, and noted that many Maldivian families depend on fisheries as a source of income.
Siyam urged relevant authorities to listen to and address the concerns of fishermen.
In his address, Siyam said the biggest challenge facing fishermen is a lack of proper mechanism where they can sell their catch for an appropriate price.
He urged authorities to engage in constructive and productive efforts to support “our brave and hardworking fishermen.”
“It is my sincere prayer that the beloved and brotherly fishermen of Maldives are always blessed with progress and prosperity,” he said.
He conveyed Fishermen’s Day greetings to all fish folk across the Maldives.
