Parliament, on Monday, has unanimously approved the appointment of Mariyam Insha Faisal as a member of the National Integrity Commission (NIC).

Insha, who previously worked at the NIC as a senior investigator, was nominated to replace Ahmed Jihad following the conclusion of his term as a member.

Parliament approved her appointment unanimously with the votes of 58 MPs in attendance.

The NIC currently has four members. They are:

  • Qasim Abdul Kareem, president
  • Aishath Shiuna, vice president
  • Aminath Shadhiya
  • Shuaib Abdul Rahman

The four members were appointed to the NIC in 2020, and their term will therefore expire next year.

The NIC is responsible for investigating unlawful acts by law enforcement agencies and law enforcement officers. It is responsible for investigating such unlawful acts where the commission of such act is suspected or if any party submits a complaint that such an act has or is being committed.

The authority to appoint and dismiss NIC members lies with the President.
