President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held discussions on Wednesday with captains of fishing boats.
The meeting took place in the morning at the President’s Office.
During the meeting, the captains raised concerns regarding the challenges facing the Maldivian fisheries industry, including the low fish purchase rate, difficulties in obtaining fuel and financing, and challenges in offloading fish.
They asked President Muizzu to continue work on developing the fisheries industry in accordance with his electoral pledges.
The captains also proposed ideas on advancing the fisheries industry using modern technology, and engaged in detailed discussions about ways to expand the fisheries market and improve fish quality.
President Muizzu provided assurance that his administration will work closely with the fishing community to resolve their concerns.
He said that he would take the issues raised during the meeting into serious consideration and deliver prompt action on them.
President Muizzu also said that he would work on holding such meetings more frequently.
During his 2023 presidential campaign, President Muizzu pledged to settle payments to fishermen within 48 hours.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam had previously said the administration would resolve the challenges facing the fisheries industry within three years.
