Gulhifalhu-Thilafushi channel closes for transport for bridge pillar installation

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has advised against travel between Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi channel as pillar installation for Thilamale’ Bridge is set to begin this week.

The ministry said this in a post on X on Tuesday, confirming pillars will be installed between the islands as part of the Male’-Thilafushi link initiative starting from Thursday this week.

The channel will remain closed from Thursday onwards, and as such the ministry has reported travel between the channel will be restricted.

Besides this, the ministry also reports that the Male’-Vilimale’ and Vilimale’-Gulhifalhu channels are also now closed as part of the bridge development initiative, adding that travel through these channels will remain restricted as well.

Earlier in October, the Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib said 45.82 percent of the Thilamale’ Bridge initiated has already completed.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu previously said the initiative is expected to complete in 2026, but it is his objective to have the project concluded early next year.
