Gaumee Party sees a thousand member decline within one week

More than a thousand people have left Dhivehi Gaumee Party (DQP) within a week, bringing the party’s membership to two thousand.

Elections Commission party registry shows that from 20th to 27th, a total of 1119 people left DQP. The party membership stood at 3218 members at the beginning of the year, which now stands at 2099 members.

When the registry was updated two days later, DQP membership did now show any change. Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has also seen a decline in membership over the last two weeks, which saw 63 people leave the party. A total of 20 members left Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) while Jumhooree Party (JP) has seen a decline of 10 members. Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) also lost 8 members within the last two weeks.

MDP leads as the largest party in the country with a total of 46,000 members. Second in line is PPM with 22,793 members, which puts the party just about three hundred members ahead of DRP, which holds 22,501 members.

With a total of MVR 3.6 million, the most amount of money is to be awarded to MDP this year. PPM, which is to receive MVR 1.98 million, stands to win the second largest amount. DRP is to be given MVR 1.9 million. While JP is to receive MVR 1.2 million, Adhaalath Party (AP) is to gain MVR 794,000. President Waheed’s Gaumee Ithihaad Party (GIP) is to receive MVR 608,000 while Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) is to receive MVR 624,000. Dhivehi Gaumee Party is to receive MVR 529,000 while Maldives National Congress (MNC) is to gain MVR 478,000.

There are currently 16 political parties in the country. One political party registration request still pending. The party, named National Industrial Alliance, is headed by the former Minister of State for Home Affairs Mohamed Fayaz.
